So the assignment this week was about studio lighting. I must say I hope that we don’t spend too much more time in the world of photography, because I personally regard it as the most boring artform and not an integral part of my career as a graphic designer. Also I have been sick with man-flu/coronavirus the entire week, so I have been delaying doing the assignment because I have not been feeling well at all. Because of my illness, I have not done all the parts of the assignment.
1. Name three different lighting sources and their functions
Natural light
Natural light is real light created by the sun. It can also be used to describe light that comes from the moon, which is reflecting the sunlight from the sun. In essence it is a type of light that occurs naturally, and we don’t need to use any equipment to create. As a source of light it is great because it is free, is constant and can be found everywhere.
Continuous light
Continuous lights are light sources that stays on when you turn it on. It provides a constant source of light. It can be tungsten light, or it can be LED. Because of the required energy to power these lights, they represent a larger power drain for the photoshoot and are often big, clunky and not very mobile.
Flash light
Every one that has had their picture taken, knows about the flash light. Flash light are lights that flash on and off when a picture is taken. Most cameras comes equipped with a flash. alternately, you can use other lighting equipment like a flash gun or strobe lights.
2. Name two light modifiers and explain the difference between them.
Soft boxes
Soft boxes come in different shapes and sizes and are used to soften the light that’s spread to thThey soften the light and even it out, providing a beautiful light to illuminate your subject. They narrow down to a lighting attachment at the back and are lined in silver, with a white see-through cover that attaches over the front to provide diffusion
Umbrellas
Umbrellas creates a broader, more diffused lighting which is similar to outdoor light that is uncontrolled and uncontained, while softboxes offer controlled, direct lighting, which is much like sunlight coming in through a window.

Portrait

In a magazine or on the Internet, find one fashion shot, a beauty shot and a portrait shot and explain how you think the lighting was set up in each shot.

For this beauty shot, I think they used a three light setup, with soft light tilted at an angle. Two lights lighting up the background, and a beautydish in front.

I think they have used a simple two light setup, with a monolight lighting up the background.

Maybe a beautydish from the front, with a softbox from the side.
