Put thought into your design

So for this weeks learning activity, we were tasked with creating five pages for a website. The site was supposed to promote our own hometown, and had to have a strategy behind it. Here is the brief:

Design a 5-page website or blog to promote your hometown (or any other place if you so choose). Present your design along with a strategy that explains the decisions you’ve made during the design process. Remember, it’s important for us to see how you think, so explain why you decided to do things the way you did.

So I made a touristy website for my hometown of Stavanger. I put emphasis on big typography, color and legibility. Also I wanted to include a lot of photos of the town and the surrounding region, as these are the main things I tend to focus on when I visit sites like these online. These are just the landing page of each of the pages, if that makes sense. So I envision that the page would continue further down, as you scrolled.

The five pages are made so that you could alternatively use them on a single page website, with each page corresponding to a section of the main page. I tend to like this approach to web design, because it is really easy to navigate with just one continuing page, and you don’t have to load each page you want to navigate the site. I wanted the look to be pleasant and professional. Also I wanted it to be easy to find the things you were looking for, so I chose to emphasize all the hyperlinks with arrow icons. Other than that there is some visual elements here and there to guide the eye and to add some visual flare. Big, bold and simple headings and images. Legibility is important on a site like this, so I made the font heavy and tried to make it as easy to read as possible.

Here are my five pages:
